RYAN placed the pencil back in the drawer and read over what he’d written. This was probably not the best way to leave things, but it was the only way. Saying good-bye to Wyatt in person would be next to impossible. He didn’t trust himself to keep it together. This was the best. Wyatt would no doubt wake up a little miffed, but that would be okay. Leave them wanting more. That was an old showbiz saying, wasn’t it? Ryan thought as he placed the note in the center of the counter. The last few days had been incredible. Perfection. And unless Ryan had misjudged him, Wyatt felt the same way. Looking back through the house, he paused, listening for any new sounds from deep inside the house. Certain the coast was clear, he walked down the hall and out the door.
He’d come so close to telling Wyatt the truth. So close. During that first morning together, Ryan had teetered back and forth, drifting in and out of the moment as he contemplated what would be best. In the end, his fears had gotten the best of him. In defiance, he’d made a last minute pact with himself: He’d tell Wyatt he was going to Boston to register for school and find another place to live. I thought you weren’t going to tell any more lies! Having the week away from Wyatt after spending so many wonderful days together was by far the best plan, given what he had to work with. At first he’d thought about asking Wyatt to call him, but thought better of it when he realized how damaging it would be to tell even more lies as he faked his way through a trip to school. Even though it made him feel like shit to do it, giving the wrong cell phone number to Wyatt was for the best.
In a week’s time, when he did come back, Ryan placed his bets on the fact that Wyatt would be starving for more time together. This need to have me around, he rationalized, would act in my favor. When he did sit Wyatt down to tell him the truth, Wyatt might be more forgiving. He might be.
Ryan pulled onto the highway and headed for his hotel. He needed to sleep. After deciding to make a quiet exit, he had forced himself to stay awake, with Wyatt in his arms, until he was certain he could slip away unnoticed. He and Wyatt had gone for broke, refusing to call it a night until the light of dawn signaled to them that night had the good common sense to give it up and so should they. Wyatt, Ryan thought as he tooled down the road, was an extraordinary man. Complex, yet simple. He was loving and warm and so responsive during their lovemaking. Ryan was surprised at how hungry Wyatt was for sex. How unwilling Wyatt was to waste even a single moment. It was thrilling and exhilarating and Ryan had never experienced anything like it before.
